One of the most common questions we get asked is: how much does a water softener actually cost? The answer depends on several factors — the size of your household, the type of unit, and the complexity of the installation. This guide breaks it all down clearly so you know exactly what to expect.
The two main costs to understand
A water softener installation has two distinct costs: the unit itself, and the labour to fit it. These are separate, and it's important to understand both before getting any quotes.
Unit cost: what affects the price?
Water softener units typically range from around £500 to £1,500 for a quality domestic system. The main factors that affect price are:
- Resin capacity — larger households need a bigger resin bed to handle more water between regeneration cycles. A 10L unit suits 1–3 people; a 15L unit is better for 4 or more.
- Salt and water efficiency — eco-friendly units like those we install use up to 50% less salt and 40% less water per regeneration cycle compared to budget alternatives. They cost more upfront but save money over time.
- Metered vs timed — meter-controlled units regenerate only when needed, based on actual water usage. Timed units regenerate on a fixed schedule, which wastes salt and water.
- Fixing kit included — some units come with the valves, hoses and connectors needed for installation. Others are unit-only and the fixing kit is an extra cost.
Installation (labour) cost
At Simply Softeners, we charge a flat installation fee on top of the unit cost. Replacement of an existing softener is £400, and a brand new installation where no softener has been fitted before is £500. These prices cover everything — the engineer's time, connection to your plumbing, setup and testing, and leaving your home tidy afterwards.
Ongoing running costs
Once installed, the main ongoing cost is salt. A typical household uses roughly one 25kg bag of softener salt per month, which costs around £7–£12 depending on the type (tablet, granular or block). The softener itself uses just 1 watt of electricity on standby, so the energy cost is negligible — less than £2 per year.
Is it worth the investment?
Research consistently shows that homes in hard water areas save money over the lifetime of a water softener. Reduced limescale damage extends appliance lifespans, lower detergent and descaler usage cuts shopping bills, and improved boiler efficiency reduces heating costs. Most households in Sussex recover the full cost of installation within 3–5 years through savings alone — and continue to benefit every year after that.
