What is a conventional boiler system?

A conventional (also called a regular or heat-only) boiler works alongside a separate hot water cylinder (usually in an airing cupboard) and a cold water feed tank (usually in the loft). The boiler heats water and stores it in the cylinder until it's needed. Cold water is fed by gravity from the loft tank rather than directly from the mains.

A system boiler is similar but doesn't require a cold water tank — it draws directly from the mains like a combi, but still uses a separate hot water cylinder for storage.

Can you install a water softener with a conventional boiler?

Yes — absolutely. Water softeners are compatible with conventional and system boilers, and in many respects the installation is more straightforward than people expect. The softener connects to the incoming mains cold water supply before it splits to serve the rest of the property — so all the water entering your home, including the cold water that feeds the loft tank, is softened.

In fact, conventional boiler systems are in some ways better suited to softener installation than combi systems, because the lower flow rates typical of gravity-fed systems mean the softener has more contact time with the water — improving softening efficiency.

Where does the softener connect in a conventional system?

The installation point is the same as for a combi boiler system: the incoming mains cold water supply, typically near the stopcock. From this point, the softened water feeds:

The drinking water bypass consideration

With a conventional boiler system, the kitchen cold tap is typically fed directly from the mains rather than the loft tank. This makes a drinking water bypass tap straightforward to install — a separate tap at the kitchen sink providing unsoftened mains water for drinking and cooking. Special considerations for conventional boiler homes

The cold water tank

If your property has a cold water tank in the loft, it's worth checking its condition before or around the time of softener installation. Immersion heaters

Properties with immersion heaters as a backup or primary hot water source benefit particularly from soft water. Gravity-fed showers
