If you have a combi boiler — which the majority of UK homes now do — you might be wondering whether a water softener can be installed alongside it. The short answer is yes, absolutely. But there are a few things worth understanding before you go ahead.
Are combi boilers and water softeners compatible?
Yes. Combi boilers and water softeners work very well together, and in hard water areas like Sussex, pairing the two is one of the best things you can do for your home's plumbing and heating system. Limescale is particularly damaging to combi boilers because the heat exchanger — the component that heats water on demand — is especially vulnerable to calcium build-up. A water softener eliminates this problem entirely.
Where does the softener connect?
A water softener is installed on the incoming mains cold water supply, before it reaches your boiler and the rest of your plumbing. This means all the water that flows through your home — to the boiler, the taps, the shower, the washing machine — is softened. With a combi boiler setup, the softener typically installs close to the stopcock, often under the kitchen sink or in a utility cupboard.
Do I need a drinking water bypass tap?
This is the most important consideration with a combi boiler installation — or any water softener installation. A water softener adds a small amount of sodium to your water during the softening process. For most healthy adults, this is perfectly safe. However, softened water is not recommended for:
- Making up infant formula or baby food
- Anyone on a clinically supervised low-sodium diet
- People with certain kidney or heart conditions where sodium intake is restricted
For this reason, we strongly recommend installing a drinking water bypass tap alongside your softener. This provides a separate unsoftened cold water feed at your kitchen sink for drinking and cooking. It's a straightforward addition that gives you the best of both worlds.
Does a combi boiler installation cost more?
Not necessarily. Combi boiler homes are typically straightforward to install a softener in — there's no hot water cylinder or cold water tank to work around, and the pipework is generally simpler. Our installation pricing is the same regardless of boiler type, and we'll confirm the full cost at your free home survey before any work begins.
How long does installation take?
A typical water softener installation takes between two and four hours. We aim to complete everything in a single visit, leaving your plumbing fully tested and your home tidy. You'll have soft water from the moment we're done.
