Moving into a new build is one of the best times to install a water softener. Everything is brand new — the kitchen, the bathrooms, the boiler, the appliances. Installing soft water from day one means none of it ever experiences hard water damage. Here's what new build owners in Sussex need to know.
Why new builds in Sussex need a water softener
New build properties are connected to exactly the same mains water supply as every other property in their area. In Sussex, that means water hardness of 285–323ppm depending on location — among the highest in England. From the moment your new home is connected, limescale begins forming inside the boiler, pipework, shower heads and appliances.
The difference with a new build is that you have a unique opportunity: if you install a water softener before you move in, or immediately after, your home never accumulates any limescale at all. The boiler that runs for 15 years in a softened water home is in the same condition at year 15 as it was at year one. The shower head that's been fed soft water since installation still flows at full pressure a decade later.
New build developments across Sussex
Sussex has seen significant new residential development in recent years, particularly around:
- Burgess Hill and Haywards Heath — major new estates on the edges of both towns
- Shoreham and Lancing — waterfront and residential developments along the Adur
- Littlehampton and Rustington — growing residential areas in the Arun district
- Chichester and the surrounding villages — new builds within and adjacent to the city
- East Grinstead and Crowborough — new housing in the High Weald
All of these areas share the same hard water supply as the rest of Sussex. Every new build in these developments would benefit from a water softener installed at the outset.
The best time to install
The ideal time is before you move your furniture in — clear access to the kitchen and utility areas makes installation faster and easier. That said, we install in occupied new builds regularly and it makes very little practical difference to the process. Installation takes 2–4 hours and creates only a brief planned interruption to your water supply.
If you've already been in your new build for a year or two without a softener, don't worry — a relatively short period of hard water use won't have caused significant damage, and installing now still gives you the full long-term protection going forward.
What to consider for new build installations
Under-sink or utility room positioning
Most new builds have been designed with a utility room, or have sufficient under-sink space, to accommodate a water softener. We assess the most practical installation position at the free survey.
Drinking water bypass tap
We always recommend installing a drinking water bypass tap alongside the softener in a new build — a separate tap at the kitchen sink providing unsoftened water for drinking and cooking. This is particularly important in new builds where the kitchen is being set up fresh and it's easy to include from the start.
Builder's warranty and plumbing
New build properties typically come with a 10-year NHBC warranty. A water softener installation connects to existing pipework at the mains supply point and does not affect the structural warranty. We always work carefully with new build plumbing to ensure no impact on the builder's installation.
New build tip: If you're buying off-plan or your property is still being built, it's worth discussing with the developer whether a water softener can be incorporated during construction. Some developers are receptive to this, particularly for premium homes — and installation during the build phase is the most straightforward approach of all.
