A water softener that isn't working properly is more than an inconvenience — it means hard water is getting through to your plumbing, appliances and boiler unprotected. Simply Softeners provides professional servicing, maintenance and repair for water softeners of all brands across East and West Sussex, whether we installed it or not.
Signs your water softener needs attention
Water softeners are highly reliable, but when something goes wrong it's not always immediately obvious. Here are the main signs to watch for:
- Hard water signs returning — limescale reappearing on taps, a scummy bath ring, shampoo not lathering as well as usual. The most obvious indicator that your softener isn't softening properly.
- Salt level not dropping — if you're topping up the salt but the level isn't falling between top-ups, the unit may not be regenerating. This is often a salt bridge (a crust forming above the water line) or a valve issue.
- Unusually high salt consumption — if you're going through significantly more salt than usual, the unit may be regenerating too frequently, indicating a setting or valve problem.
- Water in the brine tank is too high or too low — the brine tank water level is an indicator of healthy operation. Too high often means a blocked drain or float valve issue; too low may indicate the injector is blocked.
- Error codes on the display — modern metered softeners display fault codes when something needs attention. Call us with the code and we can often diagnose the issue over the phone.
- Unusual noises during regeneration — grinding, clicking or running water sounds at unexpected times can indicate valve wear or mechanical issues.
What a service visit covers
A Simply Softeners service visit typically covers:
- Testing output water hardness to confirm whether softening is occurring
- Checking and cleaning the brine tank, including breaking up any salt bridges
- Inspecting and cleaning the injector and brine draw line
- Checking valve operation and seals
- Reviewing regeneration cycle settings and adjusting if needed
- Checking resin condition where possible
- Advising on any maintenance or repair requirements identified
Most service visits resolve the issue in a single call. If parts are required, we'll provide a written quote before any further work proceeds.
Common repairs we carry out
Salt bridging
One of the most common issues — a hardened crust of salt forms above the water line in the brine tank, preventing the salt below from dissolving into brine. The softener then can't regenerate properly. We break up the bridge and advise on preventing recurrence (typically switching salt type or adjusting storage conditions).
Valve servicing and replacement
The control valve is the heart of a water softener — it manages the service, backwash, brine draw and rinse cycles of the regeneration process. Over time, seals and spacers can wear. We carry parts for most common valve types and can service or replace valves on most domestic softeners.
Resin replacement
The resin bed that does the actual softening typically lasts 10–15 years. When it deteriorates, the softener's output quality drops — water feels less soft, and hardness testing shows elevated calcium passing through. Resin replacement is significantly cheaper than replacing the whole unit and extends the softener's life considerably.
Brine tank cleaning
Over time, insoluble impurities from salt accumulate as sludge at the bottom of the brine tank. We empty and clean brine tanks as part of a full service, preventing blockages in the brine draw line and injector.
Any brand, any age: Simply Softeners services and repairs water softeners from all major brands — Harvey, Kinetico, Aquatec, BWT, Monarch, Tapworks and others. We also work on older units that may no longer be supported by their original installer. If you're not sure whether we can help, call us and we'll advise.
When to replace rather than repair
Some older softeners reach a point where repair is not cost-effective. As a general guide, if a unit is more than 15 years old and requires a significant valve replacement or full resin change, we'll always give you an honest comparison of repair versus replacement costs so you can make an informed decision.
